CA Communities: Palfrey Health and Well-Being Day

PALFREY HEALTH AND WELL-BEING DAY

@ Masjid al-Farouq (Al-Farouq Mosque)

Saturday 17th October 2015, 11am – 4pm

A unique “one-stop-shop” event that aims to introduce free health checks, advice and workshops to communities living in the area who do not share English as a first language.

The programme will be delivered in a safe, welcoming, open and accessible environment to help raise greater awareness of health issues and highlight the importance of early intervention.

The health awareness picture for South-Asian communities highlights:

  • People of Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage are 6 times more likely to suffer from diabetes  (Diabetes UK, March 2014);
  • Deaths from heart disease are twice as more likely in South-Asian communities (NHS Choices);
  • Ethnicity has been associated with lower attendance for cervical screening amongst Black and Minority Ethnic communities (Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care  2014);
  • Organ and blood donation among South-Asian communities is relatively low, sometimes informed through misconceptions about varying religious opinions of the practice. It is an issue which we are confident that religious leaders will be able to address at the event (https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk)

The event will be delivered in a community-focussed approach with women, young people and local voluntary organisations taking a lead in the management and delivery of the event.  The following organisations have already signed up as delivery partners for the day:

  • McMillan Cancer Support
  • Healthwatch Walsall
  • Walsall Council Mental Health Team
